Program Application Cover Page and Demographic Survey

This cover page as well as the demographic survey must be printed, completed, and mailed to the SOMAS Office no later than December 1, 2011. Application cover pages postmarked after December 1, 2011 will not be accepted. On-line submission of the body of the grant application must be completed by December 1, 2011.

Application Instructions

Follow these instructions carefully.

We recommend you use these instructions as a checklist to ensure proper submission of your application.

  • The grant application must be prepared single-spaced with either Times New Roman or Courier, 12-point font, with one-inch margins on the pages.
  • The title of your research project must be at the top of each page.
  • Respond to the 12 items below in the order established.
  • Each response should begin with the question asked and should begin a new page.
  • After you have prepared your grant application in the proper format, convert the file into Adobe PDF format.
  • Print a copy for your own files.
  • The first two pages of the on-line application are administrative. Click HERE to view the information you will be required to provide about your institution.
  • You will submit the PDF file in its entirety by utilizing the prompts in the online submission process.
  • Do not attempt to submit your application until you are certain the application is complete and until the complete application has been converted into Adobe PDF Format.
  • BE AWARE: PDF application will be submitted to the SOMAS Program office once you press the "Submit PDF Application" button found in the text box and cannot be recalled.
  • Application deadline for on-line submission of grant body is December 1, 2011.
  • Application deadline for the downloaded cover page and demographic survey is December 1, 2011 (postmarked and mailed).

  1. Title of Research Project. Name and Title of Applicant. Applicant's Institution.

  2. Describe the research project, including the central hypothesis to be tested and the methods that will be used. Limit: 1000 words; references, figures, and tables may be included and will not be counted against the word limit.

  3. Describe the role of the undergraduate student in the research project.
    Limit: 250 words.

  4. How will this summer research project advance your research program? Limit: 500 words.

  5. How have you involved undergraduate students in previous research activities? Limit: 250 words.

  6. List the facilities and major equipment that are available to you and your students necessary to execute the proposed research. Include manufacturer and model numbers of major equipment.

  7. Describe how you will recruit and select an undergraduate student for this research. Note: the selected student must have a baccalaureate graduation date of December 2012 or later and must be citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

  8. Include a biographical sketch of the Principal Investigator, including education, awards and honors received, and academic employment history (two page maximum).

  9. List previous, current, and planned research support. For each item in list, provide in bullet form the project dates, supporting agencies, title of projects, funding requested or granted, durations and co-PIs, if applicable.

  10. List your five most relevant publications/presentations to the project, using an asterisk (*) to identify any undergraduate student co-authors.

  11. Please provide brief budget justification for items listed on your budget page. Please recall that the maximum of the grant is $8,000 (this includes all costs associated with proposed project being requested from the SOMAS program). Please list your institution’s contribution to the travel line for student and faculty member. Budget page format is determined by the applicant.

  12. Please provide a statement confirming that 1) either the Principal Investigator or the student is a member of an underrepresented minority, or 2) the host institution is either an historically Black college or university, an Hispanic-serving institution, or a woman’s college.
